Working on the Building

And that building is my writing career. I'm taking Targeting Your Best Writing Markets with Christina Katz, and it's helping me define my niche, my goals and my strategies. The class has been an eye-opener. I was so resistant and fighting what I knew should be my specialty. But Christina pointed out some interesting connections and my brain and heart clicked.

I'm starting to lay the planks for my platform one board at a time. Don't know what a platform is? Read this. In the article, Christina says, "The word platform simply describes all the ways you are visible and appealing to your potential, future, or actual readership." It means getting your name and your work out into the world so people know who you are and what you can do, what your expertise is.

My focus is hearing loss, particularly in children. I'm already an expert in this subject, but I have much more to learn and pass on to other parents in the same situation. If I can help eliminate just a smidge of uncertainty or heartache or guilt for others, then the effort will be worth it.

Speaking of hearing, Riley continues to make good progress. Right now, we're working on building her attention span through the Interactive Metronome program. She does much better with our therapist than she does with us at home. But I guess that's just normal 6-year-old behavior. :-) She's also retelling fairy tales and stories we make up, and her expressive language is getting stronger.

School is going well. She gets her work done quickly and correctly and behaves well. Right now they're working on telling time, recognizing coins, the letter Q, more sightwords and sportsmanship. Riley hates to lose, so the sportsmanship lessons will be good for her. She is also reading simple books like the "Dick and Jane" series and a series of Saxon Phonics books. We have to help her on some bigger words, but she's doing well sounding out and recognizing most words. Kindergarten has been so good for her and she loves it.
